This months book read was Rich Leder's novel Juggler, Porn Star, Monkey Wrench*.
This was an e-book I was sent by Laugh Riot Press to read and review.
It's been a long time since I read something like this, I am more of a straight up romance type of girl so I was looking forward to reading something with rather intelligent humor.
The story is about Mark Manilow, a writer in Hollywood competing to get his script snatched up. His script Full Force gets made into a motion picture and is starring Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, his life couldn't be better. He is married to the love of his life and best friend. However the film is locked away and never to be seen again for public viewing, things start to go down hill fast for Mark. His wife then also decides to leave him for her life ambition to become....a juggler!
What happens next is a journey that can only be described as unbelievable happenings. Whilst on his way to visit his parents he meets a porn maker named Ken who tells him they should write a porn film called Broken Boner. Whilst on set he meets international porn star Dallas Westcott who manages to lure him into a relationship, moves in then refuses to leave. All whilst being told by Ken he is to smart for writing porn. He ends up going to see an old chinese guy to see if he can help him with his brain, as he keeps getting headaches. He learns to look at the phone book in a new light when a new friend Joe decides to get Phone Book: The Movie wrote and made. His family and father-in-law decide to stage an intervention after finding Broken Boner. He meets a beautiful girl called Caroline who happens to be the chinese doctors niece, has he found the girl for him and what will he do about his wife and the porn star?
There is lots of lessons to be learnt along the way and come the end you will get a better understanding of the title of this book.
This book is full of dry and sometimes dark humor, it kept me entertained from start to finish. I enjoyed reading about the relationships with all three women in this book and also the relationship he has with his family. Phone Book: The Movie turned out to be a real laugh, add in Colonel Bill Curry's stage reading of the movie and you have yourself humorous, fun read that has a different take on romance.
